Improving Autism Screening with Brain-Related miRNA

The central aim of this project is to characterize the expression of exosomal microRNA (miRNA) and nucleic acids in children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). We propose to measure the expression of extracellular miRNA and nucleic acids in children with ASD. Expression levels of miRNA and nucleic acids from blood and saliva will be compared between children with autism and normally developing controls. The goal of this study will be to identify genetic regulatory mechanisms involved in ASD and provide potential biomarkers for diagnostic screening.

Confirmed Diagnosis of Autism or Developmental Delay or Healthy Child
Exclusion Criteria:
Wards of the state
Sensory Impairment (blindness/deafness)
Confounding neurological condition (cerebral palsy, epilepsy)
Gastrostomy Tube Dependence
Active Peridontal Disease

Using Serious Game Technology to Improve Social Skills in Autism

The goal of this study is to help ASD adolescents improve social skills during face-to-face interactions. We have designed an immersive computer game to help them learn these skills in a fun way. Adolescents play the game at home 3 times a week for 3 months on a computer that we give you. In order to see how well the game is working to teach them, we have to test it against another game that is similar but teaches other skills. We measure your adolescent’s attention in the lab through computer games and by measuring their eye movements. We invite you to answer questions about their social behavior. We are flexible in how we work with families to accommodate busy schedules (e.g., weekend appointments). Families come to Penn State for three visits. We pay for all travel expenses (mileage, toll, hotel). Families are also compensated up to $450 for their time.

Raising a Child with T1D and Autism: Qualitative Thematic Analysis

We have utilized a previously completed forum and blog analysis conducted as STUDY00007977 to begin to identify to successes and challenges families raising a child with both T1D and autism experience. This study seeks to expand our knowledge through conducting interviews with families recruited both online and through the clinic. By using an Interview Guide created with our themes identified thus far, we will have a chance to expand on these themes through interviews, as well as hear from families that may not use the online community. We will recruit and interview families through the diabetes online community and through Penn State Hershey--6-8 of these families will have a child with optimal glycemic control and 6-8 of these families will have a child with suboptimal glycemic control. In addition to refining themes, this effort will help us assess the reliability, credibility, and validity of what was found via forum and blog analysis.

Interoception, the 8th Sensory System, Is it measurable?

Sensory processing is often affected in children and adolescents with ASD (autism). The 8th sensory system, coined interoception, is under studied in how it affects children with autism. Our study will compare children with and without autism (ages 11-18 years) using a tool we are developing. Our study hopes to develop psychometric properties of a tool to measure this new sensory sense.
